Sgt at Arms Nancy: Not on duty today Today’s Program: Kathleen introduced Linda Schneider who is a trained Montessori teacher as well as classical pianist and composer who came today to tell us about chickens and fruit trees and how these two things had significantly and positively allowed her to impact a lot of urban folks by having them become more interdependent with nature and making a contribution to the community. Linda told us about her experience when she first got a couple of chicks as part of a special situation when she was teaching and how these two chickens changed the lives of her students and herself as well as the surrounding neighborhood. Then Linda worked in East Oakland helping the communities transform their living environment by using chickens, gardens and fruit trees. She shared additional stories about the impacts that her actions have taken and the positive outcomes that resulted. Linda’s efforts have resulted in thousands of fruit trees being planted in neighborhoods. Over 1500 trees have been planted in the Iron Triangle in Richmond by the residents in that area. Linda answered many questions that stimulated discussion about roosters, chickens, planting trees. After her presentation there were five fruit trees raffled off to Rotarians. Stay tuned for progress reports on these trees. Thanks Kathleen for bringing Linda to speak to us.
