Today’s Program:
Tracy introduced Dr. Otis Paul by telling a story about how she found her passion with Rotovision and being able to help other with eye challenges around the world. Dr. Paul shared with us his history of when he was a Navy doctor and was involved in setting up clinics that would do cataract surgery. When he got out of the service he went on a Rotopast mission with a plastic surgeon and Dr. Paul did cataract surgeries on the mission. Shortly after that he was invited to join the SF Rotary club #2. From that point on he did eye surgery missions but found that what was needed was to develop a sustainable method where he could train the ophthalmologists and leave them with the tools to continue the important work that was started on the mission. This project then became Rotovision which is today one of the most effective program of Rotary.
Dr. Paul identified the three main elements of the Rotovision Mission: Appropriate technology, Empowerment, and Continuity of service. Dr. Paul explained how each of these elements have become the cornerstones of the programs. In addition, the continuity of service portion of the mission is critical because it has resulted in the development of partnerships with other organizations. Specifically the SEVA foundation has been invaluable in shaping the resources and specific hospital and locations for each mission. Working with other partners has resulted in a greater success of resources and a higher level of ongoing results of the projects in Asia, South America and Europe.

Dr. Paul will be presenting a program at the Rotary International Convention on Rotovision and it impact on the world. Getting to hear Dr. Paul’s presentation is another great reason for Rotarians to attend the convention. Thanks to Tracy for inviting Dr. Paul to speak to us.
On this Friday our club is involved in a Bowl-a-thon to raise money for Rotovision. If you haven’t sponsored one of our bowlers please do so. You are also invited to attend the bowl-a-thon at Albany bowl Friday evening starting at 6p.

Interact Corner by Gary Buffon – Rotary Advisor to Interact:
The Interact club made over $6000 at their Black and White dance. There was some 460 kids who came to the event. Our board members did an excellent job of organizing and running the event. Norma and I were chaperones for a couple of hours at the dance. The kids looked like they were having a good time.
Thought for Week:
I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past.
