Today’s Program:
VP Karen introduced Eve Cowen, Executive Director of Future Leaders Institute (FLI). This four year old organization was Eve’s dream when she was 16 and in high school. She envisioned providing an environment for high school students to seek out their passion while at the same time providing the means to make a positive impact on the work.
Eve has carried out her dream by creating a program which can be incorporated into a high school curriculum that provides the structure for social networking, understanding one’s passion, and creating the energy to carry out a specific goal based on the passion and how much positive impact it will have on everyone in the team. Today the program is being held in Albany, Berkeley and Oakland High Schools. Eve shared stories of the young people who have participated in FLI and the results they accomplished. She then explained how the program is funded. Major funding comes from private donations, schools, foundations and corporate partners. She is making outreach to increase funding for the program so she can bring it to more high schools. Eve also explained the awards programs and celebrations that FLI uses to acknowledge and increase the motivation of the young people. This was a well done presentation that displayed Eve’s enthusiasm about FLI and the energy and drive she has brought to make it a success. Thank you Karen for having Eve to speak to us, Eve Cowen receives her certificate of appreciation from Pres Jack
Today’s Lottery Winner: Visitor Matt Berbon had his ticket pulled for a chance at winning the pot and selected cats-eye marble winning the bottle of win. Next Week the pot is worth $150.
Interact Corner by Gary Buffon – Rotary Advisor to Interact:
The Interact Board is preparing to bring on the Intern Board Members. These are the new leaders to replace the graduating board members. They will have the opportunity to learn club operations during the remainder of this school year.
The District 5160 planning retreat is Feb 28th and May 1st . Four members from the Interact Board are attending. El Cerrito Rotary sponsored half of the registration fee for these attendees. Thought for Week:
I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than those attending too small a degree of it.
